Bank of England Sounds Alarm on Financial System Vulnerabilities
The Bank of England has raised concerns about the growing risk of interconnected weaknesses in the financial system materializing. The Financial Policy Committee (FPC) highlighted the re-escalation of the conflict in Iran and increased AI-related debt issuance as key factors.
Rises in oil and gas prices have led to bond yields increasing to levels not seen since 2008, according to the FPC. Despite the financial system and equity markets proving resilient so far, the danger of a sharp adjustment persists.
BoE Governor Andrew Bailey stressed the need for 'rigorous model testing' before deploying AI systems, citing the risk of frontier AI as a major concern. The rapid increase in AI-related debt issuance has also increased the exposure of capital markets to developments in AI, with total issuance estimated at around $450 billion.
