Bank of England Warns of AI-Driven Economic Shocks
The Governor of the Bank of England, Andrew Bailey, has issued a stark warning about the potential risks of artificial intelligence (AI) to the UK economy. He cautioned that 'not everybody always wins' in the current investment frenzy in AI, which has seen hundreds of billions of dollars poured into the sector.
The market valuation of some AI firms is already enormous, with Nvidia currently valued at $5.5tn (£4.14tn) due to massive investments by those who believe in its future potential. Tech giants like Meta, Microsoft, and Amazon are also investing heavily to develop their own models.
Bailey expressed concern that the technology could be a 'potentially very powerful weapon' if misused, and pointed out that recent incidents have shown AI's ability to uncover vulnerabilities. He noted that OpenAI's CEO Sam Altman recently delayed the launch of the company's latest model due to safety issues discovered during internal testing.
The Governor also highlighted the risks of deepfakes created by AI, citing his own experience with a recent incident where he was depicted in a fist fight with Nigel Farage through manipulated images. Bailey emphasized that the bank is working to ensure the financial system remains 'resilient' in the face of potential shocks from AI.
