Bank of England Warns of AI-Driven Financial Market Shocks
The Bank of England's governor, Andrew Bailey, has warned that the UK needs to prepare for potential financial market shocks caused by artificial intelligence (AI).
Bailey stated that 'not everybody always wins' when discussing the hundreds of billions currently being invested in AI, and cautioned that the technology could be a 'potentially very powerful weapon' in the wrong hands.
He highlighted the massive investments made by tech giants such as Meta, Microsoft, and Amazon to develop their own models. For example, Nvidia, an AI chipmaker, has a market valuation of $5.5tn (£4.14tn) due to enormous investments by those who believe in the future of the technology.
Bailey emphasized that while AI has 'great potential to strengthen growth in our economies', it is essential for the system to be 'resilient' to mitigate any potential risks.
