Bank of England Warns of Potential Interest Rate Hikes Amid Inflation Fears
The Bank of England has warned that interest rates in Britain are likely to rise due to increasing energy prices and their impact on inflation. Governor Andrew Bailey said that even though rates were kept at 3.75% this week, the bank expects inflation to reach 3.75% by the end of the year, up from its previous forecast of 3.2%. By early next year, inflation could be above 4%. If the conflict in the Middle East persists and second-round effects emerge, policy may have to tighten.
Julian Jessop, an economics fellow at the Institute of Economic Affairs, disagrees with the decision to hold interest rates steady. He thinks it's a 'mistake' that could lead to the perception that the Bank of England is falling behind the curve.
Jessop believes that raising interest rates now would help restore credibility and prepare for future price increases. However, he doesn't think there will be any relief from the cost of living crisis in the near future.
