Bank of England Warns of Potential Market Shocks from AI Boom
The governor of the Bank of England has warned that the AI boom could trigger financial market shocks. Andrew Bailey stated that the central bank is closely monitoring the significant investments being made in the AI sector, which has led to some companies being valued at multi-trillion dollar businesses.
Nvidia, the world's most valuable listed company with a market valuation of $5.5tn (£4.14tn), is one such example. Tech giants Alphabet, Meta, Microsoft, and Amazon are also spending hundreds of billions of dollars on AI technology.
Bailey cautioned that not everyone will benefit from these investments, citing the example of Netscape, which was once a leading internet search engine but no longer exists today. He warned that market participants should be prepared for potential shocks and that the system needs to be resilient in case of corrections in asset prices.
Bailey acknowledged the great potential of AI to strengthen economic growth but emphasized that it also brings substantial risks, including the possibility of an AI bubble bursting. The central bank is watching these developments closely and is prepared to deal with any potential shocks to the market.
