Bank of England Warns of Rate Rises Amid Energy Price Surge
Bank of England deputy governors Clare Lombardelli and Sarah Breeden warn that interest rates may rise if energy prices continue to surge. The Bank of England's current interest rate is at 3.75%. If oil prices remain high, businesses are more likely to pass on higher costs to consumers, leading to inflationary pressures.
Lombardelli stated that the case for raising interest rates is mounting, despite concerns about a weakening economy. She warned that the longer energy prices persist, the greater the risk of indirect effects building and inflation expectations rising.
The Bank of England expects inflation to hit 4.2% at the start of next year, more than twice its target of 2%. Typical gas and electricity bills are expected to jump 24%, reaching above £2,000 at the start of 2027.
