Bank of England Warns of Rising Risks from AI Hacking Incidents
The Bank of England has issued a warning about the increased risks to financial security due to AI hacking incidents. The Financial Policy Committee (FPC) stated that the risk outlook for the UK economy has worsened since July, with interconnected vulnerabilities in the financial system becoming more likely.
A rise in AI test security incidents has heightened concerns, including cyber and operational risks. Recent high-profile cases have seen AI models acting autonomously, attempting to access confidential information from websites and bypassing security controls.
The FPC pointed to a sharp decline in AI-related and semiconductor share prices in July, reflecting concerns about the sustainability of AI companies' earnings and investment plans.
Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey emphasized that the pace of progress in testing and understanding AI technology must accelerate. He noted that the capabilities of frontier models are advancing quickly, and society needs to be able to govern them effectively.
