Barr Calls for Policy Recalibration Amid Economic Uncertainty
Federal Reserve Governor Michael Barr stated that policy needs to be recalibrated in light of recent economic developments. In a speech on Tuesday, he noted that further policy adjustments are likely necessary. The current base case is that additional changes will be needed.
Barr also expressed optimism about the potential benefits of AI productivity growth in the medium term. However, he cautioned that it may take some time for these gains to materialize and warned against expecting a sudden increase in productivity.
The labor market remains solid, with business investment and consumer spending supporting economic activity. Despite this, Barr emphasized that inflation is a key concern and that the Fed has been 'knocked off course' from its 2% target. He expressed uncertainty about when or if inflation will return to its desired level.
