BC Government Concedes $1.46 Billion Error in Gas Revenue Forecasts
The British Columbia government has confirmed errors in its gas revenue forecasts worth approximately $1.46 billion over five fiscal years, dating back to the 2025-2026 financial year.
Energy Minister Adrian Dix stated that the most significant error involved a botched currency conversion, resulting in a 44-cent overstatement of the forecasted per-gigajoule price of natural gas for this fiscal year. The mistake was attributed to an incorrect assumption that figures were shown in U.S. dollars instead of Canadian dollars.
The errors also included a five-cent decrease in the forecasted price due to another conversion error, as well as two other mistakes stemming from outdated data. Correcting these errors resulted in an average annual decrease in expected revenues of $292 million from this fiscal year to 2030, with a significant impact on the current fiscal year's revenue.
Dix emphasized that the errors affected the province's forecasting rather than its actual revenues, which can fluctuate due to market changes. The government is working to improve its quality assurance process in forecasting, and corrections will be included in the quarterly fiscal report expected later this month.
