Belgium's Wealth Divide: Top 10% Hold 54.4% of Total Household Wealth
New figures from Belgium's National Bank show that the country's wealth is heavily concentrated among its richest households. The top 10% of Belgian households hold a staggering 54.4% of total household wealth, while the poorest half of households share just 7.7%. This means that the average wealth held by a household in the richest 10% is approximately €3.3 million, compared to just €94,000 for those in the bottom half.
The figures also reveal that the median household had around €287,000 in wealth, and that a household needs roughly four times this amount to break into the top 10%. The richest households have seen their share of wealth fall slightly from 55.5% to 54.4%, but the poorest half has lost ground as well, with its share declining from 8.2% to 7.7%
Belgium's figures are below the eurozone average of 73.1%, according to the National Bank of Belgium. Across Europe, wealth remains heavily concentrated among the richest households, with the wealthiest 10% holding 57.3% of total net wealth in 2024, compared to just 5% for the bottom 50%. The European Central Bank's (ECB) Distributional Wealth Accounts also show that household net wealth throughout Europe has continued to rise, growing 3.9% year-on-year in the first quarter of 2026.
