Bessent vs. Warsh: Treasury and Fed Clash Over Interest Rates
The US Treasury and Federal Reserve are engaging in a high-stakes battle over interest rates, with Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent and Fed Chair Kevin Warsh at odds.
Bessent has been trying to suppress bond yields by discouraging major owners of Treasuries from selling, but Warsh is focused on curbing inflation. In June, Bessent applied pressure to Japan, encouraging it to reduce spending and stabilize its currency, which would limit the risk of Japan selling US Treasuries.
In August, Bessent announced plans to increase Treasury purchases, doubling the size of buybacks from $2 billion to at least $4 billion. The announcement temporarily sent bond yields lower, but they have since resumed their ascent. On September 10th, the Treasury's buyback operation resulted in total buybacks of $5.2 billion.
Warsh countered Bessent's moves with a speech at the Jackson Hole Symposium, addressing inflation head-on and stating that 'inflation is running above our 2% target.'
