The US Treasury Secretary, Scott Bessent, is taking an aggressive approach to influencing currency and bond markets. After the US joined Japan in propping up the latter's currency, Bessent warned market participants against betting on further declines: 'I am the house now... You can bet against me if you want.'

On Wednesday, the Treasury announced a $6 billion buyback of 10-year and 20-year bonds to curb surging yields that are lifting borrowing costs for the government and others. However, the move has had uneven success, with bond yields remaining near multi-decade highs.

The Treasury's yen offensive has been more successful, with the currency rising over 6% against the dollar since the intervention. Investors have viewed the buyback as a relatively minor measure to counteract the broader market trends.
