Bessent's Bond Bungling: Treasury Secretary Tries to Influence Market
Scott Bessent's past experience as a hedge-fund manager has not prepared him for his current role as Treasury Secretary. In 1992, he was part of George Soros's team that successfully bet against the British pound, which led to a massive profit.
However, three decades later, Bessent is involved in a high-profile tussle with bond traders over rising yields. He has signalled that the Administration wants lower borrowing costs but his efforts are unlikely to succeed at this point.
The bond market is being driven up by several factors including Trump's war in Iran and its energy shock, which have increased inflation and uncertainty about the future. Additionally, the increasing public debt has raised concerns about the Treasury Department's ability to manage it.
