Bessent's Policy Mistakes Mirror Past Trades

Scott Bessent, the US Treasury Secretary, has been criticized for his handling of economic policies. As a young trader, he made his fortune by betting against governments' economic policy mistakes. Now, as Treasury Secretary, he is committing similar errors.

In 1992, Bessent helped George Soros take advantage of the UK's defense of an overvalued pound sterling. The UK ultimately abandoned its defense and let the currency depreciate, resulting in a $1 billion loss for the Bank of England.

Today, Bessent is contributing to unsustainable public finances by going along with President Trump's policies. The Congressional Budget Office estimates that the budget deficit will remain above $2 trillion, or 6% of GDP, and the public debt is on track to reach 107% of GDP by 2029.

The situation is further complicated by Trump's chaotic import tariff policy, which has raised questions about the US's reliability as an economic partner. Foreign investors are losing confidence in US Treasury bonds, forcing Bessent to rely more heavily on hedge funds and money market funds to finance the government.
