Bessent's Yield-Suppression Efforts Put Him At Odds With Fed Chair Warsh
US Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent's efforts to lower Treasury yields have put him at odds with Federal Reserve Chair Kevin Warsh, potentially complicating Warsh's communications challenge this week.
Warsh will address recent Treasury interventions in the bond market when he delivers the opening speech at the annual central bankers conference in Jackson Hole, Wyoming, on Friday.
The Fed chair has faced criticism for sending confusing signals about his views on bond yields. In June, Warsh said he was comfortable with lower bond yields, but six weeks later stated that higher bond yields were actually doing some of the Fed's financial tightening for them.
Last week, the Treasury Department announced plans to 'at least double' its purchase of longer-dated bonds, a day after 30-year US Treasury bond yields reached their highest level since 2007. Bessent said he saw the high bond yields as not reflective of market realities.
