ECB's Digital Euro Project Enters Implementation Phase

The European Central Bank's (ECB) digital euro project has been years in the making. In 2026, the European Parliament supported the creation of a digital euro, and the technical infrastructure is now moving from concept to implementation.

Fintech expert Artem Lyashanov broke down the project into components, explaining that the digital euro is an electronic analogue of cash issued by the ECB itself. Unlike money on a card or in a banking application, it's not an obligation of the bank but a direct obligation of the central bank.

The principle of operation resembles withdrawing cash from an ATM, where money is converted from a bank account into cash and becomes independent of the bank. The digital euro will be available for everyday purchases, transfers between people, travel within the eurozone, and online shopping.
