Bhuvneshwar Kumar and Varun Chakaravarthy Return for India’s T20I Series Against New Zealand
Bhuvneshwar Kumar is making a long-awaited return to India’s T20I squad after a four-year absence, set to feature in the upcoming five-match series against New Zealand. The 36-year-old fast bowler earned his recall following a standout IPL 2026 season, where he took 28 wickets with an impressive economy rate of 7.95 while playing for Royal Challengers Bengaluru. His last international appearance came in November 2022, and his comeback adds valuable experience to India’s pace attack ahead of the series starting October 22 at Hagley Oval in Christchurch.
Varun Chakaravarthy is also back in the squad after recovering from an injury that disrupted his 2026 campaign. The spinner last played for India against Afghanistan before suffering a side strain, which kept him out of recent matches. He replaces Ravi Bishnoi in the team, bringing his spin bowling expertise to the lineup. Shreyas Iyer will lead the 16-member squad, with Tilak Varma named as vice-captain. The team also includes young talents like Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Naman Dhir, alongside experienced players such as Sanju Samson, Ishan Kishan, and Arshdeep Singh.
Jasprit Bumrah has been rested for the T20I leg of the tour as part of workload management, with his focus likely shifting to the subsequent two-Test series against New Zealand. The squad features a mix of seasoned players and emerging talents, aiming to balance experience with fresh energy for the series. With the first match scheduled for October 22, the team is poised to test its depth and adaptability in the lead-up to the 2027 T20 World Cup.
