Big Four Banks Unite on RBA Rate Hike Expectations
The Reserve Bank of Australia (RBA) is widely expected to raise interest rates in September, according to all four major Australian banks. In a shift from previous forecasts, ANZ, Westpac, and Commonwealth Bank of Australia (CBA) now expect the RBA to hike the official cash rate at its next meeting, joining National Australia Bank (NAB).
ANZ economists Adam Boyton and Jack Chambers wrote in a note that they believe the RBA will raise rates to 4.85%, the highest since 2008. They cited the ongoing conflict in the Middle East and increased oil prices as key drivers of their forecast.
CBA's Head of Australian Economics Belinda Allen said that while market pricing suggests a high probability of a rate hike, it is not a guarantee. She noted that the RBA has not ruled out a rate hike and that its inflation-fighting credibility would be eroded if it did not act.
Brokers are preparing for the possibility of another rate hike, with some saying that consumers are already aware of the potential increase. Emmanuel Marios, founder of Derwent Finance, said that while a rate hike is expected, it will add further pressure to households and investors already navigating challenges such as elevated living costs and tighter borrowing capacity.
