Binance Seeks Rupee-Pegged Stablecoin to Reduce India's Dollar Dependence

Binance's APAC Head SB Seker believes that India needs its own rupee-pegged stablecoin to reduce dependence on the US dollar.

He argues that an INR stablecoin would allow Indian users and institutions to hedge against dollar volatility, rather than being exposed to currency swings beyond their control.

The idea is not new, with CoinDCX's Sumit Gupta suggesting that widespread adoption of an INR stablecoin could function like a modern Bretton Woods moment for the rupee, making it directly accessible internationally.

The current reliance on dollar-pegged stablecoins, such as USDT and USDC, is largely due to their advantage in deep liquidity and settlement infrastructure. However, this infrastructure advantage has made dollar stablecoins the default choice, even for corridors where the dollar isn't the local currency.
