Binance's Greek MiCA Bid Derailed by ECB Chief's Intervention
Binance's bid for a Greek MiCA license has been derailed after European Central Bank President Christine Lagarde allegedly intervened to stop the application. According to reports, Lagarde expressed concerns over Binance's compliance history and the potential implications of dollar-denominated stablecoins on the ECB's digital-euro project.
The WSJ reported that Lagarde personally contacted Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis to reject Binance's application. The exchange had applied for authorization under the EU's Markets in Crypto-Assets framework through Greece's Hellenic Capital Market Commission, with approval by one EU member state providing a regulatory route for Binance to operate across the bloc.
The failed Greek application leaves Binance without an EU-wide MiCA license, although the company stated it would pursue authorization in another EU member state. The setback raises questions about the role of major European institutions in shaping crypto regulations and the challenges faced by exchanges seeking to comply with EU-wide rules.
