Bitcoin as collateral unlocks generational wealth potential
Marc Bernegger, a board member of the Swiss Blockchain Federation, highlights Bitcoin’s emerging role as collateral for generational wealth. Holders can now borrow against their Bitcoin without selling it, a trend he believes will grow significantly. This approach locks up supply, enhancing Bitcoin’s scarcity and reinforcing its value as a long-term asset.
Bernegger, an early Bitcoin adopter since 2012, initially saw it as a new way to exchange value. Over time, he came to view Bitcoin as digital gold, comparing its fixed supply and rising demand to gold’s historical role as a store of value. Switzerland’s early crypto scene, particularly the rise of Crypto Valley around Zug, played a key role in Bitcoin’s mainstream adoption.
The shift toward using Bitcoin as collateral is still in its early stages, but Bernegger expects it to become a megatrend. He notes that while self-custody remains important, regulated accounts are becoming more common as holders balance mainstream financial needs with security.
Bernegger also draws parallels between Bitcoin’s long-term thinking and longevity investing. He co-founded the venture-builder Maximon in 2021, seeing the patience required for Bitcoin investment as similar to extending human health span. Despite not identifying as a Bitcoin maximalist, he remains bullish on its long-term potential, favoring it over even the Swiss franc in the future.
