Bitcoin Tumbles Below $78,000 Amid Hawkish Fed Comments and ETF Outflows

Bitcoin's recent price action has been marked by volatility, particularly following the hawkish comments from Federal Reserve Governor Kevin Warsh at the Jackson Hole symposium. The remarks sparked concerns about tighter monetary policy and triggered a risk-off move across financial markets, which had a significant impact on cryptocurrencies. Bitcoin briefly surged above $81,000 earlier in the week due to favorable macroeconomic conditions, including the U.S. Treasury's announcement to double long-dated bond buybacks starting September 9.

However, the hawkish tone from Warsh and other Fed officials unsettled traders, reversing some of those gains and injecting fresh uncertainty into the outlook for digital assets. This was reflected in notable shifts in institutional flows, with U.S. spot Bitcoin ETFs recording $201.8 million in net outflows on August 29.

Despite these outflows, which ended a nine-day streak of inflows that had helped underpin Bitcoin's recent rally, underlying sentiment for the cryptocurrency remains cautiously optimistic. Regulatory developments, including the potential passage of the CLARITY Act, have been cited as a bullish catalyst for institutional engagement, and the U.S. Treasury's plan to double long-dated bond buybacks starting September 9 is expected to keep Treasury yields lower, supporting risk assets.

Ethereum (ETH) has diverged from Bitcoin's price action, surging over 30% this week to reclaim the $2,500 level by August 29. The divergence suggests a rotation of funds within the crypto space, where investors are selectively reallocating rather than abandoning crypto altogether.
