BoE Defies Fed Hike with Steady Interest Rates Decision
The Bank of England kept interest rates at 3.75% despite rising inflation in the UK, which has reached its highest level in five months. Inflation stands at 3.1%, above the central bank's target of 2%. The decision marks a divergence from other major central banks, such as the US Federal Reserve, which raised interest rates by a quarter-point on Wednesday.
The Bank of England is expected to leave interest rates unchanged for now, with markets pricing in more than an 80% chance that the central bank will hold interest rates steady. However, a hike of at least 25 basis points is widely anticipated at its next meeting in November.
The central bank's decision is influenced by the ongoing conflict in the Middle East, which has contributed to higher energy prices. The Bank of England aims to ensure inflation comes down to 2% sustainably as the economy adjusts to the energy shock.
