BoE Dovish Shift Sparks Hawk-Dove Divide Over Rate Hikes

The Bank of England's recent rate decision has left many analysts scratching their heads. Despite a 6-3 vote to keep rates unchanged, the accompanying communications suggest that significant inflation surprises would be needed to sway further votes towards hiking rates.

The MPC pointed out clear signs of disinflation and little evidence of second-round effects from the current high energy prices. The inflation forecast was actually trimmed to show a peak of closer to 3% later in the year, which is lower than some had anticipated.

This mismatch between the vote and rhetoric has led some to speculate that there is a stark divide between the hawks and doves on the committee. The hawks argue that the recent spike in energy prices warrants insurance tightening, but this argument only holds if the shock threatens to feed into underlying inflation, which does not appear to be the case.
