BoE Hints at Rate Hikes as Inflation Tops 4% Forecast
The Bank of England has signaled its readiness to hike interest rates in response to rising inflation, which is expected to top 4% early next year. The central bank kept interest rates at 3.75%, but the tone of the Monetary Policy Committee's decision was a shift from previous meetings.
BoE Governor Andrew Bailey noted that the key question of whether the energy price surge causes broader inflation pressures remains unanswered, but acknowledged that it is early days and they are watching it closely.
Some analysts expect the BoE to raise rates only once, while others predict multiple hikes. The market is pricing in almost four quarter-point hikes over the next year, but Bailey said the outlook was too uncertain to judge.
The warning of rate hikes comes as Prime Minister Andy Burnham and his finance minister John Healey are trying to strike a positive tone about the economy before the budget on October 28.
