BOE Holds Fire on Interest Rates Amid Rising UK Inflation
The Bank of England is expected to maintain its interest rates at 3.75% despite rising inflation in the United Kingdom. Inflation has reached a five-month high, with prices increasing due to the ongoing impact of the Iran war on fuel costs. Economists predict that most members of the nine-member Monetary Policy Committee will vote to keep the main rate unchanged for the sixth consecutive meeting.
According to David Rees, head of global economics at Schroders, the economic backdrop remains relatively soft, limiting the extent to which imported price pressures become embedded in domestic wages and prices. Official figures released on Wednesday showed that consumer prices rose to 3.1% in August from 2.9% the previous month.
Many economists forecast higher inflation in coming months due to households facing increased energy bills starting in October, leading markets to expect interest rate hikes at one of the next two meetings.
