BoE Holds Interest Rates Amid Middle East Conflict Uncertainty
The Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee voted 6-3 to keep interest rates unchanged at 3.75% on Thursday, despite concerns about rising energy prices due to the ongoing conflict in the Middle East.
Bank Governor Andrew Bailey acknowledged that the recent escalation in tensions with Iran has introduced fresh uncertainty into the inflation outlook, particularly regarding oil and gas prices.
Bailey noted that energy price risks lie to the upside, but also emphasized that underlying domestic inflation remains encouraging, providing 't tentative evidence' that inherited inflation persistence may be weaker than previously presumed.
The split decision reflects an increasingly difficult balancing act for the Bank as policymakers weigh easing domestic inflation against renewed uncertainty created by geopolitical events.
