BoE Holds Interest Rates Steady Amid Rising Inflation
The Bank of England has kept its interest rate steady at 3.75%, despite rising inflation and calls for an increase from some policymakers.
In a closely watched decision, the central bank's Monetary Policy Committee voted 6-3 in favor of maintaining the status quo, with three dissenting members advocating for a 25-basis-point hike to 4%.
The Bank of England warned that an interest rate increase is becoming increasingly likely as inflation remains above its 2% target, currently sitting at 3.1%. The decision comes on the heels of the US Federal Reserve's quarter-point rate increase and the European Central Bank's second hike this year.
The UK Office for National Statistics attributed the current inflation rate to rising fuel costs, which surged 23% year-over-year in August due to the Iran war. Financial markets had priced in a 76% chance that the central bank would hold interest rates steady at its latest policy meeting.
