BoE Holds Rates as Peers Hike Amid Energy Price Volatility
The Bank of England (BoE) has decided to hold its interest rates at 3.75%, bucking a trend set by its peers in Europe and the US.
In contrast, the European Central Bank voted to increase interest rates last week, while the US Federal Reserve also raised its rate overnight in response to persistent inflationary pressures.
The BoE acknowledged that higher global energy costs have had some impact on fuel prices and utility bills due to the Iran conflict, but said it has seen little evidence of significant knock-on effects on prices and wages so far.
However, Andrew Bailey, BoE Governor, warned that if the volatility persists, it could lead to bigger impacts on inflation, potentially requiring a rate increase to ensure that inflation falls back to its 2% target.
