BOE Holds Rates Steady, Pound Weakens on Dovish Statement
The British pound declined in value against major currencies after the Bank of England (BOE) kept its policy rate at 3.75% on March 17th.
In line with market expectations, the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) held the rate steady, but a statement from the BOE was seen as less hawkish than anticipated by traders.
This perception led to selling pressure on the pound, causing it to weaken against the dollar, euro, and yen. The currency traded at $1.3360 against the US dollar, 0.8588 pounds per euro, and 207.96 yen against the Japanese currency.
Three members of the MPC - Megan Greene, Huw Pill, and Catherine Mann - voted for a rate hike to 4.00%, but their views were not reflected in the overall statement.
