BOE Keeps Interest Rates Steady Amid Rising Inflation Concerns
The Bank of England has decided to keep interest rates at 3.75% despite rising inflation in the UK, which currently stands at 3.1%, well above the central bank's target of 2%. In a closely watched decision, six members of the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC), including Governor Andrew Bailey, voted to maintain the current rate, while three others wanted an increase to 4%.
Andrew Bailey, the Bank's governor, acknowledged that higher energy costs could make an interest rate rise more likely in the future. He stated that increasing interest rates can help slow down inflation by making borrowing more expensive, including for mortgages.
The Bank of England has also paused auctions of its remaining stock of government debt, which could potentially save the UK money in the short-term, according to Faisal Islam.
