BoE Keeps Rates Steady Amid Energy Price Risks
The Bank of England maintained its benchmark Bank Rate at 3.75% in September, despite rising energy prices and increased inflation risks. The Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) voted 6-3 to keep rates unchanged, with three members advocating for a 0.25-percentage-point increase.
Rising energy costs due to the prolonged conflict in the Middle East have added to inflationary pressures, according to the BoE. Consumer price inflation rose to 3.1% in August and is expected to increase further over the coming quarters.
The central bank stated that monetary policy will continue to be set with the aim of bringing inflation back to its 2% target as the economy adjusts to the energy shock. However, the MPC cautioned that there's a risk of second-round effects in wage and price-setting if elevated or volatile energy prices persist for longer.
