BOE Keeps Rates Unchanged Amid Energy Price Volatility
The Bank of England has kept its main interest rate at 3.75% for the sixth consecutive time, as it tries to balance the impact of increasing inflation with the effects of rising energy prices.
In a move that was widely expected, the Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) voted 6-3 to keep the Bank rate unchanged, despite a warning from Governor Andrew Bailey that prolonged volatility in energy prices may pose a significant impact on inflation and make it more likely that interest rates will need to increase.
The decision comes as fuel prices continue to rise due to disruptions to global energy supplies amid the conflict across the Middle East. The Bank of England now expects inflation to increase more than previously forecast, partly due to these rising fuel costs.
