BoE Leaves Rates Unchanged Amid Energy Price Shock Concerns

Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey said Thursday that he would not 'edge' towards hiking interest rates despite three members of the Monetary Policy Committee voting in favor of a quarter-point increase. The BoE's MPC voted 6-3 to leave bank rate at 3.75%, with Bailey stating that the central bank is watching for signs of second-round effects from the energy price shock. 'I think we are in a position where we can sensibly wait to see how this evolves,' Bailey said, but also noted that policymakers respect differing views on the matter.

The BoE's decision was based on its projection that consumer price inflation will hit 3.2% in the fourth quarter of the year before easing to 2.1% a year later. However, some committee members were less reassured about the underlying disinflationary process and feared second-round effects could be material.

Bailey emphasized that policymakers need to watch for signs of persistent inflation through second-round effects, but noted that 'there are few signs so far that these direct and indirect effects do not lead to more broad-based inflationary pressures.'
