BOE Maintains Interest Rates Amid Ongoing Conflict Concerns

The Bank of England's Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) voted 6-3 to maintain interest rates at 3.75% on Thursday.

Bank Governor Andrew Bailey said financial conditions will continue to push down on inflation, making it appropriate to hold the rate at this meeting. However, he noted that if the conflict in the Middle East persists and second-round effects emerge, policy may need to tighten.

Deputy Governors Clare Lombardelli, Sarah Breeden, and Dave Ramsden also shared their views on the outlook for interest rates.

Lombardelli stated that the case for raising Bank Rate is building as the conflict continues without resolution. Breeden echoed this sentiment, saying material uncertainty will continue but policy may need to respond if risks crystallize.

Ramsden noted that there are tentative indications of a bottoming out in the labor market and activity remains resilient. He warned that domestically generated price pressures could start to emerge in the near future, making it necessary to increase Bank Rate.
