BoE Sounds Alarm on Interconnected Financial Risks Amid AI, Debt Concerns
The Bank of England has expressed concerns about the growing risk that interconnected weaknesses in the financial system will materialize. The central bank's Financial Policy Committee highlighted the re-escalation of the conflict in Iran and increased AI-related debt issuance as contributing factors.
Rising oil and gas prices have led to bond yields increasing to levels not seen since 2008, according to the BoE. While the financial system and equity markets remain resilient so far, the FPC warned that the danger of a sharp adjustment persists.
BoE Governor Andrew Bailey emphasized the need for 'rigorous model testing, conducted both before and after deployment' ahead of tighter regulation. He also noted the rapid increase in AI-related debt issuance, which has doubled to around $450 billion this year.
