BoE Stands Pat on Interest Rate as Energy Prices Soar
The Bank of England (BoE) has decided to hold its benchmark interest rate at 3.75 percent despite rising energy prices and inflation concerns.
The decision, announced on Thursday, came as global energy prices surged significantly since the July Monetary Policy Report, with Brent crude and British wholesale gas prices increasing by 36 percent and 78 percent respectively.
The BoE's governor, Andrew Bailey, noted that higher global energy costs have had a limited effect on price and wage-setting in Britain so far, but warned that if volatility persists, it could lead to a bigger impact on inflation and potentially require interest rate hikes.
Analysts warned that raising interest rates could place additional financial pressure on households and businesses, while others called for the government to announce a temporary ceiling on household energy bills to limit inflation at source.
