BOE's Bailey Cautions Against Predicting Multiple Rate Hikes
Bank of England Governor Andrew Bailey stated that market expectations of four interest rate hikes over the next year are uncertain due to unpredictable economic conditions. This comes after the BOE left interest rates unchanged, but warned of rising inflation pressures. Bailey emphasized that his officials had not discussed the prospect of multiple rate hikes during their meetings.
When asked about market rate expectations, Bailey said 'the situation ... is too unpredictable at the moment.' He added that markets must reach a view based on available information, but cautioned against making predictions. In contrast to earlier statements where he commented on market rate expectations, Bailey took a more reserved tone this time.
The BOE's decision not to raise interest rates comes as inflation concerns grow in the UK economy. Earlier this week, yields for 30-year British government bonds hit their highest level since 1998. However, Bailey stated that these market conditions did not factor into the BOE's announcement and were unrelated to their plans to wind down gilt holdings.
