BofA Warns Yen's Credibility at Risk as USD/JPY Tops 163
Bank of America (BofA) has sounded an alarm about the Japanese yen's credibility, as it continues to decline against the US dollar. The USD/JPY exchange rate recently broke above 163, a level that some investors consider a key intervention point for the Bank of Japan.
The bank believes the fundamental backdrop for the yen is improving, with Japan's stronger balance of payments and outperforming equities. However, market sentiment remains bearish due to fiscal concerns and the risk that the BOJ may be lagging behind in monetary policy tightening.
BofA warns that allowing USD/JPY to move significantly above 165 could be seen as a sign of unwillingness to defend the currency, potentially accelerating yen selling. The previous intervention episode failed to establish a sustained break below 155, and unless USD/JPY decisively moves below this level, dip-buying demand is likely to persist.
