BOJ-Backed Rate Hike Looms Large for Japan's Economy
Japan's wholesale inflation continued its upward trend in July, reaching an annual growth rate of 7.2%, according to data released by the Bank of Japan. This marks a slight decline from June's revised 7.3% gain but still surpasses market forecasts for a 7.4% increase.
The producer price index (PPI) showed a moderate month-on-month increase of 0.1% in July, following a revised 0.5% rise in June. The yen-based import price index, however, surged by 29.1% year-over-year in July, after a revised 30.1% jump in June.
The Bank of Japan's (BOJ) decision to maintain its policy steady last month may have come as a surprise to some, but the institution warned that underlying inflation could exceed its target and emphasized upside price risks. This shift in communication has reinforced market expectations of an interest rate hike by September.
