BoJ Expectations Keep Yen in Check Despite Hawkish Speculation
Market participants are digesting expectations for Bank of Japan (BoJ) policy normalization, which has kept the Japanese Yen relatively contained. Analysts at Bank of New York Mellon (BNY) note that the currency's muted reaction reflects a balance between growing speculation of further rate hikes and cautious market positioning.
The BoJ has signaled its willingness to adjust policy if inflation sustainably exceeds its 2% target, with recent data on Japanese wages and inflation being supportive of this view. However, the central bank remains cautious about disrupting the fragile economic recovery.
Despite hawkish speculation, the yen's movement has been subdued due to the interest rate differential between Japan and other major economies, particularly the US. Even with expected BoJ hikes, the gap remains wide, keeping the yen under pressure.
The Ministry of Finance has previously stepped in to support the currency, adding a layer of uncertainty that creates a situation where the yen trades in a relatively narrow range. This limits both upside and downside moves by policy expectations and intervention risks.
