BOJ Faces Pressure for Rate Hike as Japanese Inflation Remains Elevated
Japan's wholesale inflation remained high in July, according to data from the Bank of Japan. The producer price index (PPI) rose 7.2% year-over-year, which was slightly below the 7.4% forecast but still close to June's 7.3% gain.
The PPI increase was broad-based, with nonferrous metals prices jumping 40.6% from a year earlier and chemical product prices rising 12.9%. The yen-based import price index also increased 29.1% year-over-year in July.
These factors are contributing to inflation risks, which the BOJ has been monitoring closely. In its July meeting, the central bank adopted a more hawkish tone on inflation and warned that underlying inflation could exceed its target as price pressures build.
The latest data is likely to reinforce market expectations of a September rate hike, particularly with the BOJ concerned about higher import costs and a weaker yen.
