BOJ Hikes Benchmark Rate to Record High Amid Inflation Fears
The Bank of Japan (BOJ) has raised its benchmark interest rate to a record high in an effort to combat inflationary pressures. The decision was made in response to surging global oil prices, which have contributed to rising inflation expectations and wage increases.
According to BOJ Governor Kazuo Ueda, the central bank is now shifting its focus from merely boosting inflation to ensuring that underlying inflation remains stable around 2%. This preventive step aims to avoid extreme price surges that could force the BOJ to drastically raise interest rates, as seen in other major economies.
Two board members expressed dissenting opinions, urging caution to prevent excessive monetary tightening on the economy. However, Ueda emphasized that monetary policy is designed to observe its impact on domestic prices and not specifically intervene in yen movements.
