The Bank of Japan raised its key interest rate to 1.25 percent, marking a more than 30-year high.

The decision was made by a 7-2 majority vote and is expected to help counter inflation fueled by surging energy prices and a weak yen.

Central bankers are also looking to support the yen, which fell in July to its weakest level against the dollar in 40 years.
