BOJ Hikes Rates as Japan's Inflation Nears Target
Japan's underlying inflation rate is nearing 2%, according to Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda. Speaking at a press conference following the monetary policy meeting on the 18th, Ueda stated that this rate is 'roughly hitting 2%.' He emphasized that achieving the price target is coming into view but warned it will still take time to confirm whether inflation settles durably at 2%. The BOJ raised its policy interest rate from 0.75% to 1.25%, and Ueda explained that adjustments will be made incrementally based on economic and price conditions.
The decision was made with a vote of 7 in favor and 2 against, with Board member Takehiro Sato casting the dissenting votes. Sato argued that economic and price conditions have not accelerated significantly and that a rate hike at this juncture is not appropriate.
