BOJ Holds Rate, Hints at Faster Hikes Amid Inflation Concerns
The Bank of Japan (BOJ) has decided to hold its benchmark interest rate at 1.0%, but hinted at accelerating rate hikes in response to inflationary pressures.
In a monetary policy meeting that ran for two days, the BOJ voted to freeze the rate, with eight out of nine policy board members supporting the decision.
However, Bank of Japan Governor Kazuo Ueda indicated that the central bank may need to act quickly to prevent inflation from rising above the 2% target, citing rising oil prices due to geopolitical tensions and increasing demand for semiconductors driven by artificial intelligence.
Ueda also mentioned exchange rate volatility as a key factor in rate policy, noting that the impact of exchange rate fluctuations on prices may be greater than in the past.
