The Bank of Japan (BOJ) held its benchmark interest rate steady at 1.0% on March 31st, despite hints from Governor Kazuo Ueda that it may accelerate rate hikes to combat high inflation.

In a monetary policy meeting that lasted two days, eight out of nine BOJ policy board members voted in favor of keeping the rate around 1.0%, while one member proposed raising it by 0.25 percentage point.

Ueda cited rising international oil prices amid Middle East tensions as a concern for Japan's underlying inflation rate exceeding its 2% target.

The BOJ governor also pointed to inflation driven by artificial intelligence (AI) demand and semiconductor price increases, which are affecting products like smartphones and PCs.
