BOJ Interest Rate Hikes Likely as Tokyo Inflation Accelerates
Tokyo consumer inflation accelerated in September, exceeding expectations and reinforcing market views that the Bank of Japan (BOJ) will continue raising interest rates to combat persistent price pressures.
The core inflation rate, which excludes volatile fresh food prices, rose 2.7% year-on-year in September, outpacing August's 1.8% increase and economists' median forecast of 2.4%.
The broader inflation index also increased 2.7% from a year earlier, while the index excluding food and energy rose 0.4% month-on-month after a 0.7% gain in August.
This data serves as a leading indicator of nationwide inflation trends and suggests that underlying price pressures remain above the BOJ's 2% target.
