BOJ Minutes Spark Rate Hike Speculation
The Bank of Japan (BOJ) has hinted that it could raise interest rates faster than previously assumed, according to minutes from its July meeting. Several policymakers expressed concerns about inflation risks and argued for staying vigilant on price pressures.
The BOJ kept its policy rate at 1% in July but warned that underlying inflation could exceed its 2% target. Since then, the central bank has continued to tighten monetary policy, raising rates in June and September.
This shift in tone suggests that further rate hikes may be on the horizon if inflation remains sticky and the cost of waiting becomes too high. Faster BOJ hikes can have a ripple effect through the yen carry trade, making Japanese yields more attractive and narrowing the interest-rate gap versus the US and Europe.
