BOJ Officials Sound Out Hike Expectations Ahead of September Decision

The Bank of Japan (BOJ) is gearing up for its September policy decision, and market participants are closely watching key officials' comments leading up to it. Board member Kazuyuki Masu will speak and hold a news conference on September 10th, following appearances from Deputy Governor Ryozo Himino on August 27th and board member Hajime Takata on September 2nd.

The BOJ has been gradually moving away from ultra-low rates, including a June move that lifted its policy rate to 1%, the highest level in 31 years. A key reason investors care is the yen: when Japan's rates sit far below US rates, holding dollars over yen pays more, which can weaken Japan's currency and encourage 'carry trades'.

Market participants are parsing every line for hints ahead of the September 17-18 policy decision, expected to include another rate hike. The BOJ often uses scheduled events to send 'advance signals', essentially pre-meeting hints that shape expectations before the vote.
